what's the deal with shmups?

Friday, August 19, 2005
The shoot em up genre (or 'shmup' for short) is one of the oldest video game genres, and over the last few years has undergoing a resurgence in popularity.

Going back to 1978 when Taito famously almost caused a coin shortage with Space Invaders, up to the recent 'bullet storm' variations from Cave - this is a genre that has always tested the player's reflexes and skills to the maximum.

However, comercially in recent times this genre has struggled to hold its own against the onslaught of the aesthetically more impacting 3D adventures, but the challenge and excitement that this genre offer has always been maintained.

If it is something that you have never tried, then it is an often expressed view that there really isn’t all that much variation to them – the direction or travel is either to left-to-right or vertical.

Lots of newer gameplay innovations have found their ways into hit titles of recent years, such as:

Chaining: Getting a pre-defined sequence of targets and repeating for increased score (a Treasure speciality).
Bullet Storms: Dodging waves upon waves of enemy fire that come so thick and fast they almost fill the screen; first glance suggest dodging is nigh impossible, but closer examination show that while the enemy fire is often animated in arcs, circles and other similar shapes – gaps do exist! (a Cave speciality)
Danger Zones: Dodging bullets, yes, but in addition rewards are multiplied for allowing your ship to graze the path of enemy fire (Shikigami).

But what of storylines? This is a factor that has become very polished with the advent of CD and DVD storage. Looking at Metal Gear Solid (as an example), when witnessing the extended cinematic cut scenes, it can strike a stark contrast against the bare bone five level shmup model which many shmups offer (often setting the player right in the thick of the action with little or no introduction).

This is where the emphasis between these two game types change – the aim with many 3D big budget adventures is to provide many of today’s players with a level of narrative immersion as standard, whereas the shmup is almost always about mastery – whether its the total time taken to complete, the skill displayed in completing or just plain scoreboard mastery – the slim structure of most shmups encourage a sharpened skill set.

In fact, witnessing the skill of many of the world’s top players has grown into a large and thriving community with the advent of online video streaming and cheaper DVD production costs – and there are many sites and DVDs that have recorded many amazing feats of this kind of skill.

Over the next series of articles, Forenoon Filings will take a look at some of the current leading lights of the shmup scene, both current and past.

customise osx's startup screen

Tuesday, August 16, 2005

Over at Creative Bits, there is a handy tutorial showing you how to customise the background image for your Mac’s startup screen. It seems a shame that this feature wasn’t built into the system preferences amd is reliant on you substituting the real ‘Aqua Blue.jpg’ with another image which is renamed to get the desired effect.

As with all command line tweaks - be sure to make backup copies of all affected files in question before commencing!

Maybe this deserves a few lines of feedback over at Apple. If enough people make their voices heard this may be changed in a later incremental update.

underground maps on your ipod

Monday, August 15, 2005
In a bid to even the balance, and show that technology does have practical uses - how about putting a subway map on your iPod? Ever since acquiring a colour screen iPod and cramming all the photos you have owned onto it, perhaps you may still have acres of storage un-used.

A glance at iPod Subway Maps, offers a number of (mainly American) cities' metro/subway/underground maps properly formatted and sized for the iPod screen.

Cities such as Boston, Washington, New York and San Francisco are already covered in USA, with London (yay!), Hong Kong and Melbourne for those living outside America.

More cities are to follow - and this is seems to be a very good use of the iPod's colour screen in helping us to navigate our ever growing public transport networks!

the megaman effect

This Mac native app recreates the level start up of the NES 8 bit hit Mega Man 2 each time you start an application.

The Mega Man effect can (thankfully) toggled on and off easily - so its good for an afternoon's idle curiousity (after that the repeated synthesised tones do begin to grate ever so slightly...)

enable wi-fi in your car (requires screwdriver)

Forenoon Filings has a thing for original uses and deployments of Wi-Fi networking, so imagine the surprise to see that if you aren't averse to a little DIY, you can go one better than merely ipodding your car - Wi-fi it instead!

What this boils down to is a home modification of a wireless networking card, a customised Linux build along with a laptop to create a makeshift WWAN router, or 'Stompbox' as the author of the article terms it.

pairing a bluetooth phone and keyboard

What with Bluetooth being a widely used standard, this would naturally lead to a certain degree of experimentation to see which devices can 'talk to each other' - in this case a Nokia mobile phone and wireless bluetooth keyboard.

Remarkably, this can be used for typing text with the cursors allowing on screen navigation.

site redrawn

Tuesday, August 02, 2005
Thought it was time for a new lick of paint on this site. The content remains the same, but with most templates - a fair amount of code-bloat was beginning to occur (and what with me being very delete-shy, I always tended to comment rather than delete any un-used code).

Anyway this template, along with many other Blogger customisations can be found at Blogger Templates - a compendium of Blogger publishing tips, tweaks and useful other tidbits.

apple's mighty mouse

Seismic shifts have taken place over at Cupertino, CA - as Apple debut their first mouse with more than one button! Dubbed the Mighty Mouse, this features quite a range of sytlish features; perhaps the most appealing is the miniature 360 degree scroll ball - essential for navigating your way around huge displays. Integration with Tiger is tight - much as expected, although it is a shame that this was not announced along with a wireless bluetooth version but early days still!

Naysayers are beginning to speculate on the effect this will have on Apple's natural user interface design (being forced to design for a button mouse ensured that applications remained simple to navigate and control). Will the advent of programmable multi button mice mean that ease of use and intuitiveness will be become harder to master for the novice user?

UPDATE: It is worth adding that this works on both PCs and Macs.

flickr's clustering and interestingness

Forenoon Filings likes to think f itself as quite a big Flickr fan, so it is welcome to see that although it still in beta stages, extra improvments ahve not yet stopped.

As noted before, the sheer wealth and number different photos has grown to such a degree that it can be quite working where to begin looking.

The Interestingness should go some way in assisting - as this selects phots based on number and rapidity of comments, number of people who have set them as favourite and other parameters to ensure that firing up the start page will give you a very broad subject range of the best that Flickr can currently offer.

In a bid to help the organisiation and cataloguing of photos the new clustering technology will help in splitting down rather vague of generic tag subjects into sub-groups. An example of this can be seen in how it treats the urban tag.
