yahoo!'s acqusitions

Tuesday, December 27, 2005

In recent weeks, Yahoo! has acquired photo sharing portal Flickr, widget manager Konfabulator as well as most recently the bookmarking site del.icio.us.

This news is not new by any means, but it should be an interesting year for users of theses various sites - especially how Yahoo! will seek to integrate these into their communities (whether voluntarily, or by forcing users to migrate to Yahoo! email account).

As noticed, it is still very early days in these various sites' existence under new ownership, but it shows a different divergence strategy from that of Google - who often prefer to develop their new community sites (often as a spin off from their staff playgrounds).

As long as one overall profile can be used to manage your unique profile between each of these sites, then that will at least be a step in the right direction...

collaborative web word processing

News of Writely hits. To summarise, this allows the creation and shared editing of word processing documents online through the Writley web space.

Although it's functionality does slightly overlap that of Backpack, this particular site does seem to be more geared towards text based documentation - as opposed to Backpack's varied asset sharing (at least for those who are willing to pay for a premuim account).

apple to stream legal video online?

I know I've been a bit sceptical about the mechanics of online video delivery methods, but rumours are beginning to swirl in anticipation of next month's MacWorld Expo.

podcasting on psp: firmware v2.6 released

Thursday, December 01, 2005

The ability to run emulated classic games is something that I shall decide to leave behind (at least while the GBA is still working). On reaching this conclusion, it seems like well timed to update to the latest version of the PSP firmware – v2.6.

New features include a new RSS Channel feature under the Network menu icon – which is likely to prove the most useful addition since the introduction of the Web Browser in v2.0.

Now it is possible to subscribe to podcasts or any other audio file that is served by XML – so even while in the web browser, you can select an XML link and be immediately prompted to save to the RSS Channel.

Testing this with a few of my regular podcasts has proved to be successful – however it is necessary to note that the audio files are only streamed, not downloaded. On a broadband connection this causes no problems and audio streaming is constant. However failure to include a download option is one that is quite puzzling – even considering that the majority of podcasts do not contain copyrighted material.

Other incremental tweaks include the adoption of WMA media playback. Be warned that to full activate this will require you to authentication your PSP online to fully enable this.

So a year after it’s initial launch, the supported set of audio formats that the PSP supports has increased greatly – and let’s hope this continues with each major update (next on the wish list is full m4a support - without the hassle of renaming to mp4, and maybe even OGG) – a sign that Sony’s digital media strategy is finally starting to become a little more mature and less needlessly tethered to ATRAC3.

flickr shot of the month #2: november 2005

Due to the amount of photos that are available for browsing, this contest is in no way a comprehensive review of every single Flickr shot posted in a month - I doubt if this could be accomplished - even if it was a full time job; in fact, it is not even close to a selection taken from half of the available pictures posted this month.

However of all the pictures that have been viewed this month from my various groups, the shot that has impressed me the most has been the following:

This month's shot has been taken by tobyloc.

Great treatment on the Eye, the motion contrasting against the water, which has a glass-like stillness.
